Wicklow Mountains & Glendalough – The Perfect Valentine’s Trip?

Written by Brian Leonard on February 11, 2020

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year dedicated to spending with your significant other. Why not spend this weekend with your loved one exploring the marvels of the Irish countryside?

Our day trip to Wicklow Mountains & Glendalough is a picturesque journey from start to finish – with stunning views from the onset. Once leaving the bustling Dublin City behind, you and your loved one will get to experience first-hand the joys of the Irish countryside.

Soon after a brief stop in Glencree for a quick coffee, there is a perfect opportunity for a picture on the ‘PS I Love You’ bridge – which is of course the filming location of the 2007 romance starring Gerard Butler and Hillary Swank. This is a perfect opportunity for fans to recreate their favourite scenes from the movie!

After another brief photo stop at Lough Tay (also known as the Guinness Lake because of its dark waters and light beach), the tour will arrive at Glendalough where you will get to experience the rich culture and history of the ancient site and become captivated by the idyllic surroundings.

There have been several churches and other monuments erected in its monastic city, some of which date back to the 6th century. The largest, most imposing and perhaps most impressive of these structures is The Cathedral – which was constructed through several phrases from the 10th to the 13th century.

Its features are not limited to man-made structures, however. Stunning natural features of Glendalough include Poulanass River and Poulanass Waterfall, as well as the stunning Upper Lake. Located west of the Early Medieval monastic settlement, it is a perfect spot to share a quiet moment or take the perfect Instagram picture. Or both!

To many people who have visited, Glendalough represents a place of calm and serenity, which is said to be incredibly therapeutic. It is perfect for long, quiet and intimate walks throughout its numerous trails, admiring the picturesque valley. (Couples take note!)

At the end of a day of exploring, you will finish up at a traditional Irish pub in the town of Avoca, a quaint village located in southern Wicklow. A relaxing meal in a traditional Irish pub to end your Valentine’s tour!

A much more enticing gift than the standard bouquet of flowers and box of chocolates, don’t you think? 😉
