Game of Thrones fans, have you taken our Game of Thrones Tour?
Yes, you read that right, we at Gray Line Ireland run a tour that includes all the must-see locations (and more) for all you Game of Thrones fans out there, but have you ever wondered what the history and background are on each location? No? Not to worry this blog has you covered!
Not only does this tour allow you the chance to see first hand the stunning scenery of Northern Ireland it also features two key Game of Throne locations that have been a backdrop in the world-famous HBO series Game of Thrones!
Dunluce Castle, The House of Greyjoy
The first stop on this tour is Dunluce Castle which is located on the edge of County Antrim (between Portballintrae and Portrush), and is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland.
On our Game of Thrones tour from Dublin not only do you get to see Dunluce Castle, used as the House of Greyjoy, you also get to see a castle-like no other which is perched on the north Antrim Coast, perfectly capturing the atmosphere and intrigue of the medieval world.
Did you know that Dunluce Castle was first built on the dramatic coastal cliffs of north County Antrim by the MacQuillan family around 1500! It was then seized by the ambitious MacDonnell clan in the 1550s, who set about stamping their mark on the castle under the leadership of the famous warrior chieftain Sorely Boy MacDonnell during an era of violence, intrigue and rebellion.
But nowadays its huge success stems from featuring in the epic drama Game of Thrones, which has truly put it on the international tourist map. as thousands of fans of the hit HBO series visit the castle and its surrounds as its amazing ruins are used for many exterior shots of the Pyke stronghold, the seat of the House of Greyjoy – rulers of the Iron Islands.
Larrybane Quarry & Headland Home to Lord Renly & Lady Stark
But wait there is more! We also stop at most delightful and picturesque bay in the whole of Northern Ireland called, Larrybane Bay & Headland, which used to stretch out towards Sheep Island. In fact, did you know the large limestone caves we see today once served as a home to boat builders and as a safe haven from winter storms many years ago!
And for all you Game of Throne fans out there, it too is where Lord Renly swears to Lady Stark he will avenge Ned Stark’s death, but alas, meets his own end at the hands of Melisandre’s shadow baby. Making Larrybane Bay & Headland a must-see for all looking to really experience the true nature of Antrim’s coast! Don’t believe us then look below!
